ORIGINAL B-BOY "DANCIN' DOUG" DOUGLAS COLON

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Dancin’ Doug is one of the ORIGINAL First Generation B-Boys from the Kool Herc era of Hip Hop. Douglas J. Colón, his official name, was born in Harlem. He started “Burning” and getting a reputation as a great Dancer around Harlem in his early Teens. A few of the places he danced at was Har-You Act, Minisink, the Polo Grounds Center and the “Chuck Center” where many of the Football Players who played in the U.B.A./Buddy Young League used to hang out. There he met and danced with some of the first Harlem B-Boys like Kurtis Blow, Billy Bill the Puppet, Danny and Blue (we called them the Crew from the Hill).

Dancin’ Doug went to Cardinal Hayes High School in the Bronx in September of 1971. His friend, and later Dance Partner Robert Wright, A/K/A “MaTeenie Rock” took him to his old neighborhood in the Bronx that Christmas. There he met his girlfriend Laveita. She’s the first cousin of Duesy, one of the first B-Girl Dancers. She lived on the corner of University and Burnside Avenues—up the Hill from the Famous “Hevelo” Dance Club. Her house was a Fun hang out spot and that’s where Doug later met the “Godfather of Hip Hop” Kool Herc and the first EmCee of Hip Hop “Coke La Rock”.

Dancin’ Doug used to travel all over New York dancing from Dyckman/Marble Hill Projects Uptown, to Red Hook Projects in Brooklyn, and from Castle Hill Projects in the North Bronx, to St. Ann’s in the South Bronx. He would often ‘Burn’ the people and get chased out of many parties.

Through his friendship with Coke La Rock, Dancin’ Doug started dancing at the locations of the Genesis of Hip Hop: The Kool Herc Block Parties and Center on Sedgwick Avenue, the Twi-Lite Zone, the Hevelo, the Parkside Plaza and the Pinnacle of Break Dancing: the Executive Play House. This became his home as he began to perfect his B-Boy moves. As a matter of fact, Dancin’ Doug was one of the first B-Boys to command “The Circle” dancing (battling) against some of the Original B-Boys like Trixie and Wallace. That’s where he met some of the other First Generation B-Boys like the Legends Clark Kent, the Twins, SaSa and BoBo.

Dancin’ Doug was also the first person to build the bridge from the B-Boys in Harlem to the B-Boys in the Bronx. He was a "Herculoid". As a matter of fact, it was Coke La Rock that named him “Dancin’ Doug”. https://www.facebook.com/douglas.colon1/videos/10155390692810605/UzpfSTM4NTMxNTMxMTUxNjc3NjoxMzgxODQyOTQ1MTk3MzM2/?query=Douglas%20Colon

Dancin’ Doug developed his own style of B-Boy dancing using “Funny moves” like his imitation of Charlie Chaplin, the "Curly" (of the ‘3 Stooges’ fame) floor running move, the "Mexican" and the "Motorcycle rider". These moves later evolved into some of the acrobatic head spins and B-Boy moves of the present. He and MaTeenie Rock also added dance routines from the ‘Charleston’ and ‘Lindy Hop’ era to the beats of ‘Give it Up, Turn it Loose’. He also danced with “Dancin’ Doll”—Darlene Rivers from Drew Hamilton Projects. They won several Dance Contests together. http://preciousgemsofknowledge79.blogspot.com/search?q=Dancin+Doug

Dancin’ Doug started promoting Parties. His first was at the Promenade in Riverdale, NY near JFK High School. He had Kool Herc and Coke La Rock play there on a couple of occasions. Later, when he went to Queens College, he brought Kool Herc and Coke La Rock there to play in 1977. This was one of the first times the Borough of Queens was exposed to the Raw Sound of Pure Hip Hop. In 1978 Dancin’ Doug began to go to the Clubs downtown and Club 371 in the Bronx, where DJ Hollywood was the House DJ. By that time he had already turned the B-Boy mantle over to the next wave of First Generation B-Boy Dancers like "Cholly Rock" (Anthony Horne) and Tony "Fuji" Anthony Lalande.

Dancin’ Doug transferred from Queens College and graduated from C.W. Post Center of the Long Island University. While there he also continued his studies of Martial Arts. He had previously Boxed and studied Shotokan--a fighting style of Karate. He was exposed to Modern Vee Jitsu, under the tutelage of Senior Sensei Ken Brown, Master Moses Powell and Supreme Grand Master Professor Florendo Visitacion. He also trained with Soke Lil' John Davis at Colombia University, Lamumba, Sugar Crossen and Anthony Muhammad. Current Modern Vee Jitsu Grand Master (and M.D.) Robert Evans was his classmate. He gained the rank of "Deshi" Master and was also Lead Instructor at the C.W. Post Modern Vee Jitsu School. http://www.mvjnews.com/archives/53. http://www.modernveejitsu.com/?page_id=16
