OTOTO Design Ltd. (אוטוטו דיזיין) is an Israeli houseware company best known for its whimsical designs.
Company History
The founders of OTOTO, Ori Saidi and Daniel Gassner met and became friends in 1999 in Tel Aviv. In 2004 they founded the OTOTO design studio. In modern Hebrew, the word "ototo" is a slang phrase meaning "any minute now."
When Daniel and Ori began the company, they worked out of Kfar Menachem, a kibbutz in Southern Israel, in an old ceramics factory. The company soon grew, and in 2006, the headquarters and design team moved to Tel Aviv.[1]
2006-Present Day
According to the company statement, OTOTO's products are intended to be witty and unexpected. Some of the products are based on mystical creatures or folklore. In 2014, OTOTO designed the Nessie Ladle, a standing soup ladle inspired by the Loch Ness Monster. This product became one of OTOTO's best-selling products and is among its most recognizable items.[2] It gained a following on Reddit, becoming the top hit on January 21st, 2015,[3] and was Amazon's top kitchen seller in 2015. Nessie has since spawned several related items in the collection.

Since its beginning, the company has expanded outside of kitchen products into office items, bicycle accessories, and other household items.[4] OTOTO has also continued to release items for baking and cooking based on mystical creatures. The company's spaghetti strainer was inspired by the Flying Spaghetti Monster,[5] and became popular with members of the Pastafarian movement.[6]
In 2017, OTOTO created a Kickstarter campaign in order to finance a new item, the Swanky Floating Ladle.[7] The campaign was successful in bringing the project to fruition. Also in 2017, OTOTO Design participated in a global exchange competition with South Korea called the Korea Design Challenge, hosted by KT&G Sangsangmadang, a Korean art center. The competition gave several participants the chance to create a new design for OTOTO, which was then featured at subsequent design exhibitions that OTOTO attended.[8] The winner was Almond Studio, an international design studio based in Seoul, with an octopus-shaped citrus reamer. Outside of competitions such as this one, OTOTO Design frequently collaborates with external designers for new concepts.
OTOTO has shown its products at numerous international shows such as Ambiente in Frankfurt, New York Now in New York City, and Maison Objet in Paris, and won recognition at these exhibitions.[9] Today, OTOTO releases two new collections per year and distributes its products in over 30 countries.
