Object Identification System (OBIS)
OBIS codes (Object Identification System), formerly known as EDIS codes, are used in electronic data communication within the energy industry to uniquely identify measured values such as energy quantities (meter readings) or power values, as well as abstract data, in the MSCONS and UTILMD message types.
OBIS metrics are an international standard and are published in IEC 62056-6-1 for the medium of electrical energy.[1]
Electronic electricity meters and smart meters that can be read via Smart Message Language use OBIS codes internally to categorize transmitted data points.
Format and Examples
The OBIS code consists of several numbers, known as value groups, which are separated from one another by various delimiters (“-”, “:”, “.”, “*”):
| A - B : C . D . E * F |
- A: Medium (for electricity = 1; for thermal energy (gas) = 7)
- B: Channel (internal or external channels, only applicable when there are multiple channels)
- C–E: Meaning varies depending on the type of energy
- F: (not used in the German energy market)
Electrical Energy
- A: =1
- B: see above
- C: Measured quantity (active power, reactive power, apparent power, current, voltage, etc.)
- D: Measurement type (maximum, current value, energy, etc.)
- E: Tariff, rate tier
- F: Previous meter reading (not used in the German energy market)
Examples:
| OBIS Code | Unit | Description | |
|---|---|---|---|
| full | simple | ||
| 1-1:1.8.0 1-0:1.8.0 |
1.8.0 | kWh | Electricity meter reading for single-rate billing or the sum of tariffs with 1.8.X |
| 1-1:1.8.1 1-0:1.8.1 |
1.8.1 | kWh | Electricity meter reading for consumption, Tariff 1 (on-peak rate) |
| 1-1:1.8.2 1-0:1.8.2 |
1.8.2 | kWh | Electricity meter reading for consumption, Tariff 2 (off-peak rate) |
| 1-1:2.8.0 1-0:2.8.0 |
2.8.0 | kWh | Electricity meter reading: Feed-in (single-rate) or sum of rate plans with 2.8.X |
| 1-1:2.8.1 1-0:2.8.1 |
2.8.1 | kWh | Electricity Meter Reading: Feed-in Tariff 1 (on-peak rate) |
| 1-1:2.8.2 1-0:2.8.2 |
2.8.2 | kWh | Electricity Meter Reading: Feed-in Tariff 2 (off-peak rate) |
| 1-1:1.6.0 1-0:1.6.0 |
1.6.0 | kW | Active power consumption |
| 1-65:1.8.0 | 1.8.0 | kWh | Energy Consumption via Intelligent Metering System (IMS) |
| 1-1:1.29.0 | 1.29.0 | Quarter-hourly load profile, electrical active power | |
Thermal Energy
- A: =7
- B: see above
- C: Measurement parameter/qualification (source, direction, measurement qualification, data profile)
- D: Time reference; measurement parameter/qualification
- E: Time reference (meter reading, difference/maximum/average for period)
Examples:
| OBIS Code | unit | description | |
|---|---|---|---|
| full | simplified | ||
| 7-20:3.0.0 | 3.0.0 | m³ | Gas meter reading (consumption) |
| 7-0:52.0.22 | 52.0.22 | State count | |
| 7-0:54.0.0 | 54.0.0 | Gas heating value | |
