Objects in Space is a modempunk stealth space-trading game developed by Flat Earth Games and published by 505 Games. The game is currently in early access and was made available via Steam and GOG for Windows and macOS on Jun 21, 2018. Linux support is expected to available later this year.
In Objects in Space players take on the role of a lost space captain, arriving decades late to Apollo, a huge cluster of star systems light years from Earth that was to be colonized. Players must buy and sell various commodities to help earn money to keep their ship intact, along with buying additional upgrades and equipment to stay ahead of pirates, criminals and shady governments. Players additionally progress through a story line comprised of a myriad of short stories rather than one main story line that is accessible by interacting with various characters found throughout the game.[1]
The game was initially inspired by Alien and the original Star Trek movies, although when actually planning the game, Firefly and the Battlestar Galactica reboot became major influences.[2]
Gameplay[edit]
In Objects in Space players experience most of the game via a diegetic interface, with basically all information presented to the players via in-game monitors. Players primarily earn cash by buying and selling various commodities. Additionally players can take on cargo, passenger or bounty-hunting contracts as a further method of acquiring funds.[3] Being a stealth game, each component of a player's ship gives off emissions detectable by other ships and players are encouraged to disable systems to stay silent, sometimes key systems like sensors, evoking a feeling of being in "a space submarine".[4]
Reception
On whatoplay, critics gave Objects In Space an aggregate critic score of 7.51.[5]
