From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Ocean Wise Conservation Association (also known as Ocean Wise) is a not-for-profit ocean conservation organization[1] based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

History

Ocean Wise Conservation Association was founded by the Vancouver Aquarium in 2017 and publicly launched on June 8 (World Ocean's Day)[2]. In 2019, Ocean Wise welcomed Lasse Gustavsson as the new president and CEO.[3]

Focus Areas

Ocean Pollution

In 2019, Ocean Wise's Plastic Lab released a report suggesting laundry machines in Canada and the U.S. release 878 tonnes of potentially harmful microfibres into aquatic environments every year [4].

Species Under Threat

Ocean Wise's Dr. Lance Barrett-Lennard is head of the long-term research project that’s assessing the health and condition of southern and northern resident killer whales and analyzing the impact of environmental stressors such as noise and prey limitation.[5] Ocean Wise partnered with The Department of Fisheries and Oceans and the Tuktoyaktuk Community in the Arctic to test the stomachs of beluga whales for microplastics.[6]

Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup

Together with WWF Canada, Ocean Wise runs Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup, one of the largest direct action conservation programs in Canada.

Sustainable Seafood and Fishing

The Ocean Wise Seafood Program, which began with a single Vancouver restaurant partner in January 2005, now boasts more than 750 partners including retailers, restaurants, and seafood suppliers.[7]

Ocean Literacy Education

The Ocean Wise AquaVan drove across Canada in 2017[8]. Ocean Bridge[9] is an ocean literacy and leadership program for Canadian youth and young professionals.[10]

The Arctic

Ikaarvik is an Ocean Wise administered program that fosters collaboration between Inuit youth and outside researchers[11].

Aquariums

Ocean Wise Conservation Association owns and operates the not-for-profit Vancouver Aquarium,[12]. Ocean Wise also has a management stake in Oceanogràfic[13], Europe’s biggest aquarium located in Valencia, Spain.[14]
