Oded Bar-Or (August 28, 1937 – December 9, 2005) was an Israeli-Canadian physiologist and the inventor of the Wingate Anaerobic Test, a widely used method for evaluating anaerobic capacity.
Biography
Oded was born and raised in Jerusalem. As a child, he contracted poliomyelitis but overcame his limitations through special physical therapy. He studied medicine at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and in 1966 pursued advanced training at Pennsylvania State University under Professor Ellsworth Buskirk. There, he began specializing in the field of exercise physiology, particularly in children and adolescents.
In 1970, he returned to Israel and established a research center at the Wingate Institute. His first major project was the development of a simple and reliable fitness test for IDF soldiers, later named the Bar-Or Test. The test included a 2000-meter run, sit-ups, push-ups, and other exercises. Over the years, the test was refined and today includes primarily those three components. Although originally intended for young soldiers, the test is now also used to assess the fitness of older career service members and police officers. Oded later led the development of the Wingate Anaerobic Test, which became an international standard for evaluating anaerobic power. Facing funding challenges in Israel, he moved in 1982 to McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, where he established a leading center for pediatric exercise and nutrition, based at McMaster and the adjacent Chedoke Hospital.
Sixteen months before his death, Oded was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and given a prognosis of three months. He entered an experimental treatment program and designed a personal physical training regimen that prolonged his life slightly. He died in December 2005.
