Ofer Mandelboim is an Israeli scientist and a full professor in the Faculty of Medicine of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
His research focuses on the biology of Natural Killer cells and on the immune response to both internal threats such as cancer and foreign pathogens such as viruses, bacteria and fungi.
Biography
Mandelboim completed his bachelor's degree in Bar-Ilan University. He continued and pursued his master's and doctorate degrees in The Weizmann Institute of Science under the guidance of Lea Eisenbach.
Following the completion of his Ph.D., Mandelboim traveled to the United States for his post-graduate studies. Those were performed in the laboratory of Jack L. Strominger in Harvard University in Boston. During this period he began studying the immunology of Natural Killer Cells, which would continue being his main field of interest during his career.
In 1999 Mandelboim returned to Israel and opened his own independent lab at the Lautenberg Center for Immunology and Cancer Research in the Faculty of Medicine of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.
Research
Mandelboim's research focuses on various aspects of the biology and immunology of Natural Killer cells, such as their regulation, their effects on pregnancy and fertility, the receptors they use to recognize targets, and the mechanisms pathogens use to evade them.
Mandelboim published more than 290 papers that were together cited more than 19,000 times. Some of his main discoveries include:
- How Natural Killer cells recognize cells infected with Influenza viruses.[1]
- Deciphering the role of Decidual Natural Killer cells during pregnancy and their ability to learn from past pregnancies[2][3].
- Co-discovery of the immune checkpoint receptor TIGIT[4][5].
- How recognition of the bacterium Fusobacterium Nucleatum by Natural Killer cells promotes cancer development[6].
- How Natural Killer cells recognize and eliminate fungal pathogens[7][8].
- How the Human Cytomegalovirus uses miRNA to evade recognition by the immune response[9].
Mandelboim has also mentored dozens of students and scientists from Israel and the world, many of whom opened their own independent research laboratories in Israel and the world and contributed to various fields such as immunology, virology and developmental biology.
Mandelboim won several awards for his work, including the Kaye award (2015)[10] and the Rappaport prize (2020).[11]
Personal life
Mandelboim is married to Dr. Michal Mandelboim and they have three children: Ron, Shir and Lior.
