Off-roading Handbook[edit]

off-roading vehicles

Off-roading involves driving on rough terrains of muddy lands, bumpy areas, and rocky roads independent of whether a driver is professional or not. These areas can get even more complicated as river beds, dunes, beaches with the inclusion of despaired roads. So because of this unpredictability factor of off-roading, it becomes very important to plan all possible safety measures. As it has been reported that by use of safety belts and the incorporation of safety technology in vehicles has reduced the accident rate from 28 deaths per 100,000 population in 1970 to 11.5 deaths per 100,000 population in 2018.[1] . To enhance the safety level of riders an off-roading handbook can be an informative option, to avoid getting stranded on the trail.

Basics of off-roading[edit]

A safe and everlasting off-roading experience involves the selection of a suitable off-roading vehicle that is stable in harsh regions to wear the safe accessories, in case to reduce the chances of body damage. As there are versatile vehicles available in the market that are suitable for all kinds of terrain[2] .

Selection of Vehicle[edit]

Vehicle selection is the most critical part before the beginning off-road journey. Experts suggest using 4×4 vehicles as they have some key features to tackle harsh areas of off-roading[3].

Traction Control[edit]

conventional traction control

Traction control is one of those key features of a 4×4 vehicle which is to check before the trip. It directs the computer system to check the variation in Wheelspin and apply brakes according to the situation to keep the vehicle moving even in obstruction. Thorough research of traction control is mandatory, to select the appropriate version from tones of availability[4][5] .

AWD,4WD High and 4WD Low[edit]

Modern Off-road Vehicle

AWD Indicates the gearing system which allows the fluent motion of front and rear tires to turn at relatively variable speeds suitable for dry pavement[6] . 4WD low generates lower torque at high top speeds whereas if low speeds are needed with the compromise of high torque then 4WD High is recommended. Simply, use 4WD high when the medium driving speed is to be maintained at wet, slippery, or snowy roads[7]. Another case is to switch to 4 AWD high when there is a probability of getting stuck in sandstorms. Try to restrict speed to 55mph or less otherwise it would end up damaging the transfer case. while 4WD low maximizes power with traction, which enables smooth crawling motion over rocks, creeks, or to overcome steep roads[8]. Its speed is limited to 40mph or less and is preferred at rough terrains. 4WD is compatible drive in the terrains of southern California and Dubai desserts.

Locking Differentials[edit]

Car locking differential

To turn 4*4 at corners, the four wheels should turn at a different speed. For this to happen the differential should be maintained between four wheels to cause easy rotation. To secure, this differential locking is used which enables all the wheels on the axle to move at the same speed. In this way, different power is provided to each wheel, which is compatible with its need to give a push in rough terrains [9].

Custom Build Vehicle[edit]

Tires[edit]

Off-roading means endless long and harsh roads, which can lead to vulnerability of 4*4 parts getting ruptured. To some extent, this disability of parts is tolerated except for tires. So the presence of situation-compatible tires without compromising their quality is above all. The type of tire can vary from situation to situation like a muddy tire has different mechanics than sand and rock tires, to make traction between road and vehicle[10].

Suspension[edit]

A vehicle suspension is one of the body lift that serves to absorb all kinds of shocks.[11] In more simple words it takes all the abuse of off-roading and prevents disturbances/shocks from affecting drivers and vehicles. More stable suspension, that can carry heavy foundations of vehicles like roof tents can generate an easier trek[12].

Bumpers[edit]

Bumpers, also named bull bars are used to cover the vehicle from any damaging object during off-roading. Some off-roaders have rear bumpers too depending on the type of driving is being done. Many aftermath bumpers allow placing the tire at the vehicle back which can be used in case of a flat tire. And even if it gets stuck into the mud hole, the spare wheel wouldn't get buried under the vehicle[13][14].

Winch[edit]

In off-roading, there is always a chance of a vehicle getting stuck or its battery getting dried out. At that instant, it becomes necessary to use Winch. The winch is a mechanical device used to pull a vehicle through another vehicle or anchor stationery[15] . A high-quality winch can be a bit expensive than low quality one, but it will fulfill the need to drive out light to heavy cars, with less chance of getting deteriorated at the moment when it is needed the most. If the quality of the winch is high but still the right techniques to use the winch are not employed then it will bother at needed times at most [16].

Off-roading Conditions[edit]

Mud[edit]

Traversing through mud is the most difficult condition of off-roading according to the veterans[17]. Before driving in the mud, some factors are to be considered for example the estimation of muds depth and how much it is to be traveled. If the depth and the distance both are large, then the risk of driving a vehicle over it shouldn't be taken. However, if both of them are within the limit, then mud should be skillfully crossed. Push the air down to the pressure of 20 pounds, then immediately vehicle is to be placed in 4WD mode together with turning traction control off. And lastly to clear way the mud, the vehicle should be accelerated [18]. The point is to avoid too much or too little throttling as it will cause the engine to absorb water and slide down the off-chamber, respectively[19].

Sand[edit]

Although traveling through any tacky situation requires maintaining horsepower but when driving through sand clustering tires side, Use 4WD high to boost up the torque to overcome the terrain. Reducing the tire pressure can help to balance weight equally to all sides of the vehicle. Similarly by deflating the tire to 20 psi will result in a tread surface area increase hence more traction. Going below the 20psi may cause the tire to wrap off the rim, which can be dangerous. To overcome sand dune optimum momentum should be maintained because either extreme will risk getting airborne or not overcoming sand dune[20]

Rock[edit]

Driving through rocks is like crawling because in this case speed is kept super slow to avoid collision chances. Another thing to avoid collision is to depressurize tires and keep the vehicle in 4wd low, then according to vehicles break over and departure angles select a track. Before going for any action its mandatory to know have the Awareness of the height and width of the rig ,that is an essential part of rock crawling. The main theme of rock crawling is to use foot delicately for example throttling level is to be light and consistent.
