Office Syndrome

Office Syndrome is a collection of symptoms related to the poor sitting posture, sitting too long in front of the desk, it can potentially lead to serious issues, especially for one’s muscles and spine. If you work in an office environment, chances are you may experience from Office Syndrome even though you may not know it. The typical office worker spends hours upon hours sitting in the same position, toiling away in front of computer screens.

Office Syndrome symptoms Many symptoms of Office Syndrome do not seem drastic at first, but when left untreated can become serious. For some, the symptoms can also be emotional ones. Those who suffer from Office Syndrome might begin to encounter feelings of sadness, depression or extreme tiredness.

Other than sitting in the same position for long periods of time, common problems of 'Office Syndrome are:

  • Sitting with your legs crossed – sitting in this position for a long time causes one leg to continuously apply weight on the other, affecting the condition of your spine
  • Numbness of fingers arms, and feet,
  • Muscle ache
  • Tendonitides such as De Quervain’s tenosynovitis and Tennis elbow
  • Headache
  • Sitting hunchbacked or slouching forward
  • Dry eyes
  • Sitting on the edge of your seat
  • Giddiness
  • Depression
  • Sitting or standing with your arms folded
  • Insomnia,
  • Back pain
  • neck pain
  • shoulder pain
  • knee pain
  • Fatigue
  • Carrying your bag on one shoulder

The TREATMENTS Based on the symptoms as described above, start performing exercises, speak to the doctor or investigations such as an X-ray, ultrasound scan, or blood tests may be recommended. The treatment essentially depends on the symptoms and body part that is of concern, and commonly involves exercises, physiotherapy, and alternative therapies such as acupuncture and there are new technological solutions. However, as the saying goes, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”, it is much easier to take measures to prevent Office Syndrome rather than have to deal with the problems when they develop.
