Oh Long Johnson is a viral video of an unnamed black and white cat growling in a manner that sounds like "human-like gibberish",[1] including the phrase "oh Long Johnson".[2][3]

The cat was a housecat that was disturbed by something. It first appeared on the scene in 1999 and with the cations, it appeared to be saying, "Oh Long Johnson", "Oh Don Piano. Why I eyes ya".[4] After the success of it and the excess of 6.5 million views by 2012, it caught the attention of the South Park producers. According to an article about the cat on Týden.cz, this lead to memorabilia which included T-shirts, sweatshirts, mugs, dog clothes, teddy bears, magnets and badges being sold.[5] It has its own article page on the Know Your Meme website. Additionally some info on "Don Piano" is included.[6] There many uploads of Long Johnson-related songs on the SoundCloud website. Among these are work by The The Belvoir House Band and Miss Caffeina.[7] The title of the Miss Caffeina album was inspired by video cat.[8][9] It was in the Spanish charts for ten weeks, peaking at #1 in March 2019.[10][11][12]
Screening history[edit]
The video first appeared on television on America's Funniest Home Videos in 1998. In 2006 it was posted to YouTube,[1] and by 2012, videos of the cat had been viewed 6.5 million times.[13] For a while it was a craze.[14] The clip was included in the 2019 Cat Video Fest which was held at the Vancity Theatre in Vancouver on the 20th of April. There were to be five consecutive screenings of the videos.[15]

Even though the cat appears to be saying "Long Johnson" and may appear to be talking in English, this is not what the cat is saying. And The Vancouver Sun says that it's not, but it is more fun to believe otherwise.[16] In the clip, the cat is growling in reaction to the presence of another cat. Strangely, it sounds like human gibberish.

The original video has been widely imitated,[17] with remixes and merchandise. The video has also found recognition in non-English-speaking countries.[2][18]
In popular culture[edit]
It had made its way info the Faith Hilling episode of the animated television show South Park. In the episode, people are putting themselves in precarious situations and saying "Oh long Johnson".[19][20][21] It has also been included in The Daily Show in 2013, 2017 and 2018.[22][23][24] In 2010/2011, Convicted Killer Scientists put out a single, "Oh Don Piano.[25][26] A band from Spain, Miss Caffeina have taken the words "Oh Long Johnson" as the title for their new album.[27][28] In an interview for Crazyminds.es, band member Sergio confirmed it was from the Long Johnson cat internet meme.[29] The album was in the Spanish charts for a total of ten weeks, peaking at #1 in March, 2019.[30] It's mentioned in Verena Mermer's 2018 novel, Autobus Ultima Speranza.[31]
In a March, 2019 Hot Press article about music group, Black Midi, and talking about musician Greep and his vocalization, writer Ed Murphy said it sounded like he was channeling his inner "Oh Long Johnson" at times.[32]
