History[edit]

Oikos magazine was born in 1996 out of the need for a forum for exchange of views, debate and reflection on political, ecological and cultural themes. Under the leadership of editor-in-chief Dirk Holemans, attention was paid to political theory, sustainable consumption, economics, globalisation, human migration and urbanisation. In 2009, in parallel to the journal, Oikos think tank was established to feed the social debate around long-term socio-ecological challenges. Holemans became coordinator of the think tank, which publishes books and articles, organises study days, talks, conferences and lectures and conducts research, usually in cooperation with other organisations.

Orientation[edit]

Oikos publishes mainly in the field of ecological economics. To this end, Tim Jackson's standard work Prosperity without Growth was translated into Dutch [1]; as well as Saskia Sassen's Expulsions. Brutality and Complexity in the Global Economy [2].

Another area of expertise are the commons, where citizen collectives such as energy cooperatives, co-housing projects and picking farms were mapped. Between 2016 and 2018, studies of new commons in Belgium were conducted in collaboration with Tine De Moor of Utrecht University, partly commissioned by the King Baudouin Foundation, showing that their commons had grown significantly since the 2008 financial and economic crisis.[3].

European green network[edit]

Oikos is a member of the Green European Foundation, a network of green foundations and think tanks from all over Europe. In that framework, it developed transnational projects and organised international conferences in Brussels on themes such as Energy Democracy[4], Just Transtion[5], Fair and Healthy Food[6], Commons[7], Cities As Places of Hope [8] and Gender & Feminism [9]. These projects are often accompanied by the publication of essays or discussion papers like for instance Freedom & Security In A Complex World [10]] - available in English, French, German, Hungarian and Spanish.

Ecopolis (formerly: Het Groene Boek)[edit]

Ecopolis is Oikos' annual public event at Kaaitheater in Brussels where Belgian and international writers, academics and civil society thinkers are invited to debate the transition towards a socio-ecological society. Each edition is built around a central theme. Recent themes were Digital Together featuring Kate Raworth, Aral Balkan and Alicja Gescinska (2017), Just Transition featuring Kate Raworth, Alison Tate and Jean-Pascal van Ypersele (2018), Generation Hope featuring Christian Felber, Maeve Cohen and Sherilyn McGregor (2019), Again(st) Nature featuring Jan Rotmans, Anuna De Wever and Olivier De Schutter (2020) and Dare To Care (upcoming in 2021).
