Phra Kru Praphat Aphathorn (monastic name: Ābhātharo)[1][2] is a Thai monk of the Mahānikāya sect. He currently serves as abbot of Wat Son Sattharam in Sakad Subdistrict, Sangkha District, Surin Province, holds the second-class Phra Kru ecclesiastical rank, and has been elevated to the honorary position of Subdistrict Chief Monk (Kittimasak). Formerly Subdistrict Chief Monk of Sakad Zone 1, he is widely revered in southern Isan as a geji ajahn (accomplished master) renowned for sacred knowledge and meditation.[3]
Early life
Phra Kru Praphat Aphathorn was born Ok Eiabthawi on 15 December 1968 (B.E. 2511), a Sunday, the 10th day of the waning moon of the first lunar month, at House No. 3, Moo 8, Ban Son, Sakad Subdistrict, Sangkha District, Surin Province. His father was Mr. Miaw Eiabthawi and his mother was Mrs. Ruean Eiabthawi.[4][5]
Ordination
He entered the monkhood on 1 March 1988 (B.E. 2531) at the ubosot of Wat Klang, Sangkha Subdistrict, Sangkha District, Surin Province. His preceptor was Phra Kru Kanyan Sangkhakit (former Subdistrict Chief Monk of Sangkha Zone 2), the announcing teacher was Phra Bor Kamalo, and the confirming teacher was Phra Chalong Thanwaro. Upon ordination he received the Pali name Ābhātharo.
Education
Phra Kru Praphat Aphathorn completed Prathom 4 in 1979 at Ban Ta Mom School in Sakad Subdistrict. In 1993 he passed the highest level of monastic Dhamma examinations (Nak Tham Ek). He later earned a Certificate in Sangha Administration in 2007 and a Bachelor of Arts in Buddhist Studies (majoring in governance and political science) in 2013, both from the Surin Campus of Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University.
Ecclesiastical appointments
In 2007 he was appointed abbot of Wat Son Sattharam. The following year he became acting Subdistrict Chief Monk of Sakad and was soon confirmed in the full position. After administrative restructuring, he served as Subdistrict Chief Monk of Sakad Zone 1 from 2018. In 2023, prior to reaching the mandatory retirement age of 80 for Sangha administrators, he was granted the honorary rank of Subdistrict Chief Monk (Kittimasak).
Monastic and public service
Since 2007 he has directed the Dhamma and Pali studies centre at Wat Son Sattharam and served as the monastic representative on the committee of Ban Ta Mom School.[6] He chaired the Sakad Subdistrict public training unit in 2008[7] and has led Buddhist propagation activities for the subdistrict since that time. Since 2020 he has chaired the Kok Nong Na sufficient-economy learning centre at Wat Son Sattharam, which also houses the world's tallest standing stone-carved statue of the revered monk Luang Pu Suang.[8][9][10] He also acts as adviser to the Wat Son Sattharam cultural network under the Surin Provincial Office of Culture, Ministry of Culture.[11]
Ecclesiastical title
On 5 December 2013, on the occasion of His Majesty the King's birthday, he was granted the ecclesiastical title Phra Kru Praphat Aphathorn (second-class rank for subdistrict chief monks). The appointment was published in the Royal Gazette, Volume 131, Special Section 20 ข, 26 September 2014, page 22, item 354.[12]
