Olink Proteomics
Olink Proteomics is a protein biomarker discovery company that develops and manufactures proteomics products and services for medical research. Its headquarters are located in Uppsala, Sweden with offices and service laboratories in Waltham, Massachusetts, Shanghai, China, Singapore, and Tokyo, Japan. It became listed on NASDAQ in April 2021[1] under the symbol OLK.[2]
Company
Olink was founded in 2004 based upon the research of Ulf Landegren at Uppsala University, Sweden. The company was reorganized in 2015 with the appointment of the current CEO Jon Heimer and CSO Ida Grundberg, and the selling of certain product assets.[3]
Technology
The company’s products and services monitor health and disease through the simultaneous analysis of up to 3,000 proteins[4] through the use of antibodies and an attached synthetic snippet of DNA.
The core technology uses a pair of protein recognition antibodies in what they call a Proximity Extension Assay[5], which is a form of immuno-PCR[6] where antibodies joined to barcoded stretches of DNA oligonucleotides detect the protein of interest. The quantification of the DNA using real-time PCR or next-generation sequencing gives the quantification of the protein being measured.
Collaborations
A collaboration organized through the Karolinska Institute called SCALLOP (Systematic and Combined AnaLysis of Olink Proteins) involves over 35 Principal Investigators from 28 research institutions, aggregating human study collections across a range of diseases including coronary artery disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and bipolar disorder. The aim of the SCALLOP Consortium is to identify novel molecular connections and protein biomarkers that are causal in disease through the combination of genomic data, disease phenotype data, and circulating biomarker data.[7]
The UK BioBank in 2020 launched one of the largest scientific studies measuring the link between genetics and human disease through the measurement of circulating proteins. Called The Pharma Proteomics Project, A consortium of 10 leading biopharmaceutical companies has commissioned and funded this effort, where Olink will be providing laboratory services.
