Oliver Steil (born December 2, 1971) is a German manager and CEO of TeamViewer AG,[1] a publicly listed software company.[2] Previously, Steil held various management positions at McKinsey & Company, Debitel, Sunrise Communications and Permira.[3]

Life[edit]

Steil was born in Gelsenkirchen. After graduating from high school, he studied electrical engineering at Ruhr University Bochum. Steil began his professional career at McKinsey & Company in 1998. There he primarily focused on companies from the telecommunications and technology sector. In 2004, he became a partner in the consultancy.

Steil moved to Debitel in 2006.[4] As a member of the Board of Management, he was initially responsible for marketing, sales and strategy at the mobile communications service provider. Following the departure of Axel Rückert, he was promoted to Chairman of the Board of Management at the end of 2007.[5] In this position, he was involved in the sale of Debitel from Permira to Freenet. He left the company a year later.[6]

In 2010, Steil took over the management of Sunrise Communications. Under his leadership, the Group's results improved and the number of mobile subscription customers increased.

Steil then worked for the private equity firm Permira, where he became partner in 2015. In 2018, Steil moved to the management of TeamViewer, where he became CEO.[7] His tasks included the preparation of the IPO of the company, which had been acquired by Permira in 2014.[8]

Under Steil's leadership, the company changed its business model from license sales to subscriptions. In addition, the portfolio was expanded to include solutions for the digitalization of processes along the entire value chain.[9] The diversification started under Steil also resulted in several acquisitions.[10] During his tenure, TeamViewer also became a sponsor of the Manchester United F.C. football club and the Mercedes-AMG Petronas and Mercedes-EQ motorsport teams.[11][12]
