Olivia Kemp (born May 9, 1990)[1] is a British visual artist, best known for her expansive detailed drawings of imagined landscapes. She has exhibited with several galleries including The Saatchi Gallery, Griffin Gallery, The National Gallery, James Freeman Gallery, and Browse & Darby. She has work in private and public collections such as the V&A, University of the Arts London and The Rothschild Collection.[2][3][4]

Early Life and Education[edit]

Olivia Kemp completed a BA (Hons) Fine Art: Painting at Winchester School of Art in 2011 and went on to study an MA in Drawing at Wimbledon School of Art in 2013.[5] In 2014 Kemp gained a full scholarship to the Royal Drawing School where she completed the postgraduate program and went on to become one of the thirty 2014 Alumni and part of their Young Artists Faculty.[2]

Career[edit]

Known best for her large-scale drawings which construct and remodel landscapes; combining observational studies, with fantastical places that exist only in her imagination,[6][2] Kemp has been exhibiting her work since 2011.[5] In 2015, she was commissioned to create a piece based on the RIBA award-winning Flint House,[7][8] which remains at the Waddesdon estate as part of the Rothschild collection. Based in London, her art is heavily influenced by the places she has seen and read about, citing inspiration from the work of travel and landscape writer Robert Macfarlane and poets such as Edward Thomas and Kathleen Jamie.[9] Her series of imagined places, created as a direct response to residencies in Norway, Guernsey, Italy and Scotland, measure over six feet in length, and are produced entirely in pen.[8][6]

In her artist statement, Kemp explains; "I draw in order to make sense of landscape but also to construct and remodel it. I build worlds and imaginary places that grow out of a need to interpret the sites that I have known, expanding and developing them across a page. This encompasses everything, from the visions of a grand landscape right down to the details of the land, the plants and creatures that may inhabit it.”[6]

Kemp held her first solo show at Browse and Darby, a London Mayfair gallery in late 2017.[10]

Exhibitions[edit]

Notable exhibitions include; Bargehouse, Oxo Tower Wharf (2011),[4] The Other Art Fair (2013),[11] The Saatchi Gallery (2014),[2][12] Lacey Contemporary Gallery (2015),[13] Jealous Gallery, Christies New York (2016),[14] James Freeman Gallery (2016-2018),[15] Art For Guernsey (2017),[12] Browse and Darby (2017-2018),[16] Andelli Art (2018),[17] London Art Fair (2018)[18]

Awards and Prizes[edit]

Olivia Kemp won the Jealous Prize in 2014[19] which led to her work being exhibited at The Saatchi Gallery and a print of her work 'That Which Flourishes Remains' becoming part of the permanent collection at the V&A.[3] In 2015 she won the Richard Ford Award[20][1] and she was shortlisted for the Griffin Art Prize in 2016.[21] Kemp won the National Open Art (NOA) 2016 Best Drawing Award which led to the NOA Winners Exhibition at Mercers' Hall and Pallant House Gallery.[22]
