Olufunke Adekoya otherwise known as Funke Adekoya SAN, is a Nigerian lawyer and administrator who specializes in Litigation and Arbitration. She was elevated to the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria in September 2001.[1]

Education and early life[edit]

Funke holds both Nigerian and British nationality[2] and attended the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University), Ile-Ife, where she obtained a second class upper bachelor's degree in Law in 1974. She was subsequently called to the Nigerian bar in 1975. She then proceeded to the Harvard Law School, Boston, Massachusetts in the United States of America, where she obtained a Master's degree in Law (LL.M) in 1977.[3][4]

Law career[edit]

Funke is currently the head of arbitration practice group at AELEX, a law service firm. Prior to being the head of Dispute Resolution Practice Group at the firm, she was appointed Notary Public in 1986.[5] Since then, she has represented both local and transnational parties in issues relating to domestic and international arbitration proceedings within and outside Nigeria. In 2004, Funke received a practicing license to become solicitor of England and Wales.[6] In 2021, Funke was ranked in the Chambers and Partners Global Guide for her practice in dispute and resolution.[7][8]

Professional membership and fellowships[edit]

Funke is a member of different professional associations and groups such as the Nigerian Bar Association, International Bar Association, the London Court of International Arbitration African Users Council, International Council for Commercial Arbitration, Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (London), International Federation of Women Lawyers and Cairo Regional Centre for International Commercial Arbitration. She is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (London) and a former vice-president of the Court of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) in Paris.[9][6][10][11]

Awards[edit]

In 2019, Funke was named the partner of the year at the African Legal Awards 2019.[12]
