Omar Mukhtar
Omar Mukhtar is an entrepreneur and artificial intelligence technologist active since 2004.[citation needed]
He is the founder and chief executive officer of Omar Autonomous, a company developing technology that enables autonomous driving capabilities on any vehicle, regardless of brand, model year, or manufacturer.[1] Previously, he worked on large scale AI systems at technology companies including Amazon and Microsoft/[citation needed]
Education and early projects
Mukhtar earned a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, with a thesis focused on AI based stock market prediction.[2]
His earliest documented AI work involved developing a system that applied AI techniques to live stock market data. This project marked the beginning of his focus on deploying AI systems end to end, from data ingestion through real world operation.[3]
Research and evaluation
Mukhtar conducted research at the Center of Excellence for Document Analysis and Recognition (CEDAR) at the University at Buffalo on Sentiment analysis and information retrieval.[4]
His work included algorithms for sentiment analysis, also referred to as opinion mining, and polarity detection, evaluated through benchmark programs sponsored by the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity (IARPA) and run by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) as part of the Text REtrieval Conference (TREC). These evaluations included blog summarization and blog distillation tasks focused on extracting opinion and sentiment from large scale, real world text corpora.[5][6]
He also conducted research into AI based written language recognition, addressing challenges in cursive scripts such as Arabic and Nastaʿlīq. This work appears in technical surveys and reference works on character recognition and document image analysis.[7][8]
His work on polarity detection was evaluated in the TREC 2008 (TREC-17) Blog Track, a benchmark program sponsored by the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity (IARPA) and run by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). He co-authored the University at Buffalo's submission for the blog summarization and distillation tasks, which focused on extracting intelligence from large-scale, real-world text corpora.[9] The results of these evaluations, specifically regarding "Blog Distillation and Opinion Analysis," are archived by the Defense Technical Information Center (DTIC), the central repository for defense-related scientific information for the United States Department of Defense.[10]
Omar Autonomous
Mukhtar founded Omar Autonomous to apply autonomous driving technology broadly, including to vehicles already on the road as well as future vehicles, rather than limiting deployment to newly manufactured autonomous cars.[11]
According to the World Health Organization, approximately 1.19 million people die annually in road traffic crashes worldwide, with injuries being a leading cause of death among people aged 5 to 29.[12] In the United States, motor vehicle crashes resulted in an estimated 27,365 fatalities during the first nine months of 2025.[13]
Personal life
Mukhtar works in Kufic and Square Kufic calligraphy and practices perfumery, as well as sculpture in wood and stone.[14]
He also documents endurance activities, including high altitude mountaineering such as climbs on Mount Rainier and long distance cycling events including the Seattle to Portland Bicycle Classic.[15]
