Omari Akil is a U.S.-based game designer, content creator and founder of Board Game Brothas[1].

Early Life[edit]

He was born in 1986 in Algiers Point, Louisiana. He is the youngest of three siblings. He went to school at Norfolk State University in Virginia, earning a degree in computer science[2]. He worked as a programmer at IBM[2].

Career[edit]

Based in North Carolina, Akil is the lead designer of a company called Board Game Brothas, a company co-founded by Akil and his brother Hamu Dennis who is a videographer and photographer>Howe, Brian (6 February 2019). Akil shared with Indy Week that he had been interested in a career in video games but wanted to focus more on the emotional impact of games, turning to board game design.

Rap Godz was designed

Akil raised $80,000 for Black Lives Matter in the summer of 2020 through sales of his board game on Rap Godz[3]

Akil is also the founder of The Blacktop video network, a Youtube channel designed to feature content created by Black game designers and content creators.

His hip-hop-themed game Rap Godz raised $25,000 in 30 days on Kickstarter. Hoop Godz was fully funded on the first day of launch on Kickstarter.[2]
