The company was founded in 1984 by Rainer Aberer with its original headquarters in Hohenems and today employs 800 people. The product range includes diagnostic systems for transformers, converters, rotating machines, cables and wires (primary technology) and test equipment for protection and measurement technology (secondary technology). In addition, services are offered in the areas of consulting, commissioning, testing, diagnosis and training. Customers include energy suppliers, manufacturers of operating equipment, large industrial companies and energy technology service providers.

On June 18, 2009, the founder and sole owner of the company, Rainer Aberer, and his wife Sharen Seversen were killed in an accident near Dougherty (Texas) with their private aircraft, a Cessna 182. Rainer Aberer had already handed over the management of Omicron to a management team in 2000. He himself had since then been involved in the development of new business fields, such as educational software or laboratory measurement technology. [5]
