On site, in time. Negotiating differences in Europe is an Open Access online publication, released by the Leibniz Institute of European History in Mainz (Germany) in November 2016 and first presented at the histocamp 2016. On site, in time examines incidents in various European locations, exemplary of European history research since 1500. Approximately 60 articles in "On site, in time" illustrate the diverse and often conflictual ways differences and inequalities were negotiated. The articles depict strategies employed to promote, present, preserve, mitigate, or abolish difference. Such strategies may include discussion, peaceful solutions and aid, as well as migration, missionary activity, protest, or even exclusion, war, and destruction.
Topics and Contents of „On site, in time“
On site, in time is intended for readers with an interest in history, religion, politics, and social issues. All articles were written by researchers at the Leibniz Institute of European History who are involved in researching the handling of differences in Europe.
The articles' structure typically comprises three parts:
- Constellations: This initial section examines the historical context—what events occurred at a particular location and who were the participants?
- Differences: The second section describes how difference and inequality were perceived and negotiated by those directly involved. A key question is how religious beliefs and arguments interacted with other forms of belonging (e.g., social class, gender, nationality).
- Significance: The conclusion considers the long-term effects of the local events. What were their consequences beyond the specific site? What do they reveal about Europe-wide changes in negotiating difference and inequality?
