Maartje Andrea Hensen (born March 30, 1995) and Roxanne Francis Weijer (born July 3, 1993), known as Once Upon A Journey and @onceuponajrny.[1], are travel bloggers, influencers, YouTubers, and photographers. They're a Dutch lesbian couple traveling all over the world and documenting their experiences, as well as (LGBT) travel tips, on their website onceuponajrny.com[2]

Early life and education[edit]

Maartje was born in 's-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands, and moved to Heerhugowaard at age 5. When she was 17, she moved to Amsterdam, where she was studying Media & Culture at the University of Amsterdam. In Spring 2015, she studied abroad in the United States, at Emory University.[3][4] She graduated from the University of Amsterdam in June 2015, with a Bachelor of Arts. After graduating, Maartje worked for a variety of film festivals in the Netherlands and she was a film critic for Preview Magazine[5]

Roxanne was born in Blaricum, Netherlands, and grew up in Eemnes. From a young age, she traveled to many places (both Europe and other continents) with her family during holidays. After high school, at age 18, she took a gap year and traveled around Southeast Asia and Oceania with her best friend at the time. When she returned, she studied to become a physical therapist at Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences, from which she graduated in June 2016.

The couple met when they were both living and studying in Amsterdam. They first met while working a side job at the cinema in Amsterdam, in 2013.[6] Maartje was still in a relationship at the time and neither of them was aware of their interest in girls. After being friends for a year, Roxanne and Maartje became a couple on August 4, 2014. Maartje now identifies as bisexual/pansexual and Roxanne as a lesbian. Both girls came out to their friends and family in the same year.[7][8] The couple got engaged on November 3, 2017, during the Yi Peng lantern festival in Thailand.[9] They're currently planning their wedding, which will take place in August 2020.

Career[edit]

Roxanne and Maartje sold all of their belongings and gave up their Amsterdam apartment and went on an indefinite world trip on March 3, 2017. They had started their first website (onceuponajourney.nl) a few months before their departure. The couple started their Instagram-account around the same time, but the initial idea was to tell folk- and fairytales from across the world. In the summer of 2017, the couple decided to share their own travel stories and travel photos. In October 2018, they launched their current travel blog, onceuponajrny.com. In the Netherlands, the couple gained popularity with their freelance work for the Dutch newspaper Metro. From July 2017 to August 2018, they shared their adventures as a lesbian travel couple through articles and videos as 'de Reismeisjes' (translation: the travel girls).[10]

In August 2017, GoMag interviewed the couple about the most amazing trip they've taken together[11]. In April 2018, Autostraddle stated they 'have the kind of Instagram where you’re just like stfu, get out of here in a tone of wonder and awe mixed with a tad bit of jealousy, as you scroll through their dreamy photos'[12]. In June 2018, Cosmopolitan UK included them in an article about how to stay safe when you're traveling as LGBTQ+[13], inspired by their blog about travel safety tips.[14]

In November 2018, the lesbian couple was interviewed by Forbes about how they turned their passion into a career[15], alongside famous travel influencers Marie Fe and Jake Snow.

The couple was mentioned by the popular LGBT+ travel websites Nomadic Boys[16], Dopes on the Road[17], Couple of Men[18], What Wegan Did Next[19], and by popular travel blog Nomadic Matt.[20]

LGBT+ Modeling and Photographing[edit]

In 2019, the couple modeled for LGBT travel campaigns for the Tourism Authority Thailand (TAT)[21], Pink Budapest[22], and StockholmLGBT[23]. For StockholmLGBT, they weren't only models, but they were also the photographers of the campaign.
