The One11 Tower, also known as The Monroe Building, is an 18-story office building located at 111 West Monroe Street in Downtown Phoenix, Arizona. The building opened in 1964 as the Arizona Title and Trust Building it later became the First American Title Building.[1]

Design and construction[edit]

The One11 Tower opened in 1964 as the Arizona Title and Trust Building. The architects were Weaver & Drover of Phoenix, general contractor selected to build the building was Chanen Construction Company. The Modernist building has often been called Phoenix's equivalent of the Seagram Building in New York designed by Mies van der Rohe and Philip Johnson. This is due to the black reflective curtain wall of glass on the buildings North and South sides. The East and West sides of the building were covered in 8,496,218 one-inch ceramic tiles that were installed in four weeks of intense hand labor. The first floor entrance that faces Monroe Street features a colonnade and a Mid Century folded-plate roof. The lobby was built with floor to ceiling windows and Brazilian terrazzo for flooring. In 2008 the east and west sides of the building were renovated by local architect Will Bruder. The tiles were ether removed or covered by randomly sized metal panels that incorporate animated LED lighting that eliminate the building at night.[2][3]

Additional information[edit]

On April 23, 1983 a four-alarm fire broke out on the 10th floor resulting in 20 firefighters suffering from smoke inhalation and $9,000,000 worth of damage.

The building is now owned by Via West Group and contains a number of firms and offices.[4]
