OneSoil is a Swiss agricultural technology start-up providing a mobile app and an online web app for precision farming.[1] The products are based on publicly available satellite imagery from Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 and machine learning algorithms. The platform and its digital field analytics combine precision farming and crop production knowledge gathered during field trials, as well as proprietary ground truth data. The mobile and web apps allow users to do both remote crop monitoring and variable-rate seed and fertilizer application. [2] The apps are free of charge for farmers, and OneSoil also provides agricultural analytics to business partners. [3][4][5]

In 2020, OneSoil was named the Best Product in the Environment & Green Energy category at the WSA Global Congress.[6] It was announced that OneSoil had helped towards achieving UN Sustainable Development Goals #2 (Zero Hunger) and #13 (Climate Action). In May 2020, OneSoil became a member of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Global Alliance for sustainable agriculture development. In September 2021, OneSoil was recognized as the champion of the FAO-ITU Regional Competition "Digital Excellence in Agriculture in Europe and Central Asia" in the "Agriculture innovations systems and sustainable farming – connected farm management systems" category. [7]

During the US government shutdown, OneSoil was one of three start-ups that provided open access to field and crop data.[8]

History[edit]

OneSoil was founded in 2017 and has raised $500,000 in a pre-seed funding round from Haxus, Bulba Ventures, and angel investor Leonid Lozner.[9] In 2019, Bulba Ventures and Haxus reinvested $1.2 million in the seeding round.

In 2021, OneSoil raised $5 million in Series A funding from international investors Almaz Capital and PortfoLion. This brought the total capital raised since its funding to $6.7 million.[10]

On October 1, 2021, OneSoil announced that Morten Schmidt joined the team as the new CEO. Morten had previously served as a global leader of Agriculture Digital and Precision Solutions & Telematics at CNH Industrial.[11] In the autumn of 2021, the company opened an office in Warsaw, Poland. [12]

The OneSoil Platform[edit]

The OneSoil digital farming platform consists of the Android/iOS mobile apps and the web app. The OneSoil web app includes the web version of the OneSoil Scouting app and tools for variable-rate application of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium fertilizers. The app automatically detects fields and their boundaries, helps monitor crop development via changes in the NDVI, and helps mark problem areas during field scouting. Farmers can add notes in the OneSoil mobile and web apps and share these notes with their colleagues afterward. The OneSoil web app also provides a five-day weather forecast and makes it possible to visualize data from agricultural equipment.[13]

As of May 2022, more than 350,000 farmers and consultants use OneSoil across more than 180 countries. According to the company, the total area covered around the world amounts to roughly 280 million acres of global land.[14]

The OneSoil Map[edit]

In October 2018, OneSoil launched the first interactive international map in the world to contain information on 60 million fields and 27 crops in 46 countries across Europe and the United States for every year since 2016. The map is based on high-resolution imagery data from the Sentinel satellites combined with Mapbox GL JS processed by special machine learning algorithms.[15] Map data is built using the NDVI index, climate indicators, and relative field productivity. Information is available on the size, crop, stage of plant development, and 'field score' for individual fields. The map also makes it possible to compare changes for regions and countries over the years and provides insight into local and global trends in crop production. Users can report inaccuracies in identified crops and fields to developers, this data is used to improve machine learning algorithms. [16]

In 2018, the OneSoil Map was named an AI & Machine Learning Product of the Year, according to Product Hunt, winning the Golden Kitty Award. [17] In 2019, the OneSoil Map was a Bronze Winner in the Maps, Places & Spaces category at the Kantar Information is Beautiful Awards.
