Onfido is a software company headquartered in London with offices in San Francisco, Lisbon, and Delhi.[1]. The company was founded in 2012 by three Oxford University alumni – Husayn Kassai, Eamon Jubbawy, and Ruhul Amin[2] – who met while running the Oxford Entrepreneurs Society.
Onfido’s identity verification service uses machine learning to compare a person’s identity document with their facial biometrics. The technology is commonly used by financial service businesses for KYC purposes. Checks are currently offered in 192 countries for global customers including Zipcar, Couchsurfing, Revolut, and Square.
Funding
After receiving seed investment from the Oxford University Innovation and Saïd Business School, Onfido raised $4.5 million in Series A funding led by Wellington Partners in 2015[3][4][5]. Idinvest Partners led a $25m Series B funding round in 2016[6][7][8][9]
In 2017, Onfido raised a Series C round of a further $30m[10][11][12], bringing total investment to $60m. Investors included Crane Ventures and Microsoft Ventures, as well as existing investors Salesforce Ventures and Idinvest Partners. It was the first European investment for Microsoft Ventures.[13]
Team
Onfido CEO and Co-Founder Husayn Kassai sits on the Advisory Committee of the Oxford Seed Fund and the All Party Parliamentary Group on AI. COO and Co-Founder Eamon Jubbawy is Deputy Chair of Tech City UK's Fintech Delivery Panel.
In 2016, Kassai, Jubbawy, and Amin were named among Forbes' ‘30 Under 30’[14], and won the Startups Awards’ ‘Young Entrepreneur of the Year’[15]. Kassai was listed among Business Insider's 100 Coolest People in UK Tech[16] in 2017.
In October 2017, Onfido announced several new hires to its senior management team, including former Executive Director of the Wikimedia Foundation, Lila Tretikov, as Independent Board Director[17]
