Only One is a digital advocacy hub for the ocean conservation movement. It was founded by photographers Cristina Mittermeier, Paul Nicklen and Shawn Heinrichs in 2020. With a growing network of almost 1M committed ocean activists worldwide and 10K monthly donors who give what they can to supporting cutting-edge ocean-based climate solutions, Only One works to scale the impact of the ocean conservation movement, driving immediate action alongside long-term change.

It was named one of Fast Company's top 10 most innovative not-for-profit organizations of 2022.

History[edit]

Only One began in 2019 when SeaLegacy's Cristina Mittermeier and Paul Nicklen partnered with the Blue Sphere Foundation's Shawn Heinrichs to build a new nonprofit focused on scaling the overall impact of the ocean conservation sector through a combination of mass communications and crowdfunding.[1] The co-founders intended to build a common utility for NGOs in the ocean sector, and to make collective investments in movement-building in order to turn "apathy into climate action."[2]

“Stories inform and inspire us all. The Only One platform combines storytelling with technology, aiming to transform empathy into action to deliver concrete, tangible impact for our planet and communities around the world,” co-founder Cristina Mittermeier said upon the launch of the organization. “People often watch a documentary or see a story online and ask themselves: ‘What do I do next?’ Only One closes the loop on impact communication and merges the call to action with compelling content, allowing members to take direct steps to help heal our oceans.”[3]

The organization works to harness the power of media and technology to create and amplify stories that inspire a worldwide audience of ocean advocates to raise their voices to protect the ocean, the planet, and each other.[4] In 2022, Only One was named one of Fast Company's top 10 most innovative not-for-profit organizations, based on its broad focus in supporting innovative projects across the ocean conservation movement:

There’s no silver bullet for saving the ocean, so The Only One Collective is trying more of a buckshot approach, getting lots of people to donate a small amount of money each month that gets spread out to fund a variety of solutions working to rebuild ocean life. Called the Tide, this network of donors has grown to more than 8,500, and in 2021 they supported leaders like Pascoal Nhamussua of Love the Ocean, who is working on kayak-powered sustainable fishing projects in Mozambique, and Nikita Shiel-Rolle, a scientist and advocate helping train locals to become certified marine community scientists in the Bahamas.[5]
