Opangtongdang Jamir (born 16 August 1991), known professionally as Opang Jamir, is an Indian model and actor. He represented India at the 7th Edition of Mister International 2012 [1] held at Bangkok, Thailand.[2] He is also the 1st Northeastern Indian to represent India at an International Pageant.
Early life
Born to Waipokba Jamir and Mrs Merenkala at Mokokchung, a district inhabited by the Ao Naga tribe in Nagaland. Opang completed his primary schooling at Impur Missionary School, secondary schooling at Hill View Higher Secondary School, and higher secondary at Model Higher Secondary School. He then chose to complete his graduation from Indira Gandhi National Open University while pursuing his promising career in modeling and cabin crew training.
He lost his father at an early age, in 1996, on 25 November, when he was just 5 years old. Opang and his father shared a very good relationship.[3]
Opang has an elder sister, a former beauty queen, a younger brother, and from his stepfather, two younger sisters and one younger brother.
Career
His elder sister, the former beauty queen, inspired him to do modeling. While in 10th standard, his elder sister participated in the Miss Mokokchung 2007 pageant, where she placed first runner-up.[4] Opang witnessed local models on the ramp for the first time and found it inspiring.
Later, in 2008, he pursued his first modeling casting and was selected. By the age of 16, he began his modeling career. While in school, he faced bullying due to the absence of his father, which affected his confidence. However, after starting modeling, he regained his strength and self-esteem, as he disclosed during a media interaction in 2016.[5]
Modeling
He made his debut at Lakme Fashion Week in 2014, walking the ramp for designer Asa Kazingmei from the Tangkhul Tribe of Nagaland.[6] He was subsequently invited to the Fashion Week each season.[7] Opang also walked as the showstopper at the Nagaland Designer Association's launching show in 2011. He made a special appearance at the Miss Northeast Supermodel 2011, where Ketholeno Kense from Nagaland won, Sukalpa Das from Assam was first runner-up, and Lily Maibam from Manipur was second runner-up.[8]
Opang judged the Pond's Eclectic Model Hunt 2014 alongside Shiva Thapa and Kopil Bora.[9][10][11] He also participated in a concept shoot titled "The Neo Naga Man" by Tail Feathers with photographer Shanthungo Ezung.[12][13] There was also a documentary fashion photoshoot with photographer Suchamayang Kichu in collaboration with Doordarshan Kohima.[14]
He also did a "Look Book" shoot with Vikram Bawa, India's prominent celebrity photographer.[15]
He walked as showstopper at Guwahati Fashion Week 2016 for designers Akash, Nabam Aaka, Daniel Syiem, and others.[16] At the 2nd Northeast India Fashion Week, he was showstopper for Nana Gona, Archana Kabra, and others.[17][18] Adil Hussain, an Indian actor, also walked the ramp.[19] Opang was the choreographer and show director.[20][21][22][23]
Opang Jamir is one of the few Northeastern models who have gained national and international recognition.[24]
Pageantry
He was the 1st Mister Earth India 2011.[25] He was scheduled to represent the country in Guatemala, but his U.S. transit visa was denied, preventing his participation in 2011.
In August 2012, he was crowned Mister International India 2012 and represented India at the 7th Edition Mister International 2012, held from 14–24 November in Bangkok, Thailand.[26][27][28]
Opang is a grooming guru, fashion expert, show director, choreographer, and trainer. He has mentored numerous pageant candidates, aspiring models, and cabin crew members under his agency, "OJ Modeling grooming and Training agency," in Dimapur.[29][30][31]
He launched "Naga's Next top model" season 01 under his initiative and production.[32] The curtain raiser was held on 27 July at the Agri Expo ground.[33] The grand finale, after several elimination rounds, photo shoots, and training sessions, took place on 19 April 2014 at the Naithu Resort in Dimapur.[34][35][36]
Opang mentored the first Mr Arunachal Mega Model Hunt Contest 2016.[37]
He was nominated as "Person of the Year" by The Northeast Today.[38] He was recently featured in the Celebrity Spotlight column of Eclectic Magazine, the most circulated magazine in Northeast India.[39]
