open flightmaps (OFM) is a collaborative project to develop and maintain a free universal database of aeronautical data (OFMDb) used to render high quality maps for VFR flights. Official Aeronautical Information Publications (AIP) released by the Aeronautical Information Service (AIS) of each Flight information region (FIR) act as primary data source.
History
OFM was created by Oliver Vorderegger in 2011 as part of his work at Graz University of Technology [1][2] and later handed over to the non-profit open flightmaps association (OFMA).[3]
Coverage
OFM covers many European as well as some African FIRs. [4] The database is updated and released every 28 days on AIRAC effective dates.
For a new FIR to be added, at least one contributor has to volunteer and commit the minimal set of data which consists of all airports, airspaces and navigational aids visible on a 1:500'000 scale aeronautical map. Data is acquired either:
- manually by use of the proprietary OFMX editor [5].
- programmatically by converting AIP documents to OFMX [6]
Syntax and plausibility checks are in place to assure basic data quality. Furthermore, users of OFM are encouraged to report errors.
Usage
The complete database can be downloaded as OFMX [7] files, an improved dialect of AIXM 4.5. Subsets are also available as ARINC 424, OpenAir [8] and CUP. [9] Rendered maps are made available as PDF, EPSG:3857 tiles and Mapbox tiles.
