Operation ZR-MAJOR
Operation ZR/MAJOR is an alleged CIA codename given to the efforts by the clandestine organization to assassinate Fidel Castro before and immediately after the Bay of Pigs Invasion associated with the larger ZR/RIFLE CIA Cryptonym. The American Mafia was allegedly involved during the planning for this surreptitious proposal due to their interests in the gambling industry that Castro's regime threatened. A number of different plans were created with the intention of assassinating Castro including but not limited to the use of poison pills administered by Juan Orta and the use of poisoned cigars. Ultimately none of the proposed plans were attempted due to logistical problems.
The American Mafia's motive for involvement in the assassination attempts was their desire to consolidate the gambling, prostitution and recreational drug industry in Cuba following a removal of Castro from power. The Cellini brothers were allegedly involved in this conspiracy offering a source close to Castro "large sums of money" and "privileged treatment in the future of Cuba".
Due to the illicit nature of operation ZR/MAJOR, much of the physical evidence is based upon historical memoranda and very few historical documents created at the time of its conception. The existence of this operation was largely classified until the sanitized version of a report on the operation was released alongside the Kennedy files of 1994.
