An opponent is a person (or group of persons) with opposite or adversarial goals, with which you have conflict or expect to in the future. The word appears in politics, in business and in sport and game.[1]

Conflict[edit]

Conflict can occur between people when a difference of opinion turns into a quarrel, between organizations in a trade war, for example, and between countries in war. They become opponents of one another.[1]

An opponent when it comes to love is also called a rival.[2]

Depending on the type of disagreement, there are winners and losers at the end. If everyone is happy after the disagreement ends, there are only winners. More often, if no one is happy at the end, there are only losers.[3]

Sport and game[edit]

In competitive individual sports such as chess, there is usually one opponent; In team sports such as soccer, it can be said that both each of the two teams are one's another opponent as a group, and each player is opponents with every member of the other group as individuals.[1]
