Optimus Ride is an MIT spin-off technology startup technology company that develops self-driving vehicle technology. The company was founded in 2015 by Ramiro Almeida, Ryan Chin, Albert Huang, Sertac Karaman, and Jenny Larios Berlin, with the goal of deploying efficient, sustainable, and equitable mobility systems.[1]

History[edit]

Optimus Ride was formed by a team of MIT engineers and scientists that competed in the 2007 DARPA Urban Challenge along with the creators of the MIT CityCar.[2][3] In September 2016, Optimus Ride conducted demonstrations with the Perkins School for the Blind.[4] After receiving approval from the City of Boston and Massachusetts Department of Transportation in May 2017, the company began testing in Boston’s Innovation District within the Ray Flynn Marine Industrial Park.[5]

Partnerships[edit]

Nvidia, the maker of GPUs for self-driving vehicles, has backed Optimus Ride in the process to further develop their technology.[6][7] Optimus Ride has also created partnerships with Swiss Re, one of the world’s largest re-insurers, and Liberty Mutual, a global insurer.

Self-Driving Vehicle Deployments[edit]

In November 2017, the company announced a partnership with LStar Ventures, a real estate development, to deploy a self-driving vehicle mobility service, at Union Point, a smart city, outside the city of Boston.[8][9][10]
