Orders from Above is a 2022 independent historical drama film written, produced and directed by Vir Srinivas in his directorial debut. It tells the story of the interrogation of Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann by Israeli police officer Avner Less. The film stars Richard Cotter as Less and Peter J. Donnelly as Eichmann.
Orders from Above won numerous awards internationally at film festivals including Best Feature Film at the 2021 Melbourne Underground Film Festival, with Cotter and Donnelly winning Best Supporting Actor, and was released digitally in the United States on July 19, 2022.[1][2][3][4]
Plot[edit]
In 1960, Adolf Eichmann, after evading capture from the Allies for 15 years, is found living under a false identity in Argentina. Eichmann is abducted by Mossad and brought to Israel to await trial. Without enough evidence for a guaranteed conviction, Police Captain Avner Less must interrogate him and extract a confession from the architect of the Final Solution.
Cast[edit]
- Richard Cotter as Captain Avner Less
- Peter J. Donnelly as Adolf Eichmann
- Darrell Hoffman as Colonel
- Emmanuel Drakakis as Guard
Production[edit]
Vir Srinivas was attending Sydney Film School when the COVID-19 pandemic shut his school down for four months in 2020. During this time, he wrote the screenplay for Orders from Above, intending to begin filming when lockdown restrictions eased.[5]
Being a no-budget film, Srinivas employed his unexperienced classmates as crew and had actors working pro bono. Due to the lack of any budget, the film was shot in black-and-white and consists mainly of dialogue, much of which was taken from the authentic transcripts of Eichmann's interrogation.[6][7][8]
Reception[edit]
The film received generally positive reviews with critics praising Srinivas' direction and the performances of Cotter and Donnelly.[9][10][11][12]
