The Oregon-Maple Street Bridge (better known locally as the Oregon Street Bridge) is a concrete girder bridge over the Sturgeon Bay in the city of the same name, which is one of two bridges to carry WIS 42 and WIS 57's business routes in the downtown (the other being the 1931 Sturgeon Bay Bridge).[1] As the bridge's bascule spans have a higher clearance, the required openings of the bridge are reduced, keeping the downtown traffic flow moving while minimalizing the disruption.

History[edit]

Due to the Michigan Street Bridge becoming increasingly decrepit, construction finally begun in 2006. The Michigan Street Bridge was then immediately closed after the modern bridge opened.

Incidents[edit]

On August 14th of 2009, a unidentified motorist was stuck on the bridge as the arms were opening up to 45 degrees.[2] The tender noticed, but the motorist drove off after a short conversation. It only gained attention after news reporters asked the police the authenticity of the photo.

On December 26th of 2014, a large barge known as The Texas bumped into the nearby area of the center of the leaves after a miscommunication error.[3] Door County Highway Commissioner John Kolodziej said "They communicated with our bridge tender, who had asked if they needed a bridge opening, and they indicated no, because they were going to stop between the two bridges. Unfortunately, they made a miscalculation as far as being able to stop in time." The bridge was tested several times before reopening, with no found structural errors.
