Orgain is an Irvine, California-based manufacturer of organic, plant-based protein foods.[3][1] The company was founded in 2009, and in February 2022, it was reported that Orgain was going to be acquired by Swiss conglomerate Nestle from Los Angeles, California-based private equity firm Butterfly Equity.[4]
History[edit]
Orgain was founded in 2009 in Irvine, California by physician Andrew Abraham.[1] Abraham is a cancer survivor, and his interest in nutrition came from having to drink protein shakes to aid in his recovery from chemotherapy and radiation treatments.[5] After surviving cancer and graduating from medical school, he decided to make his own shakes, quit medicine and started Orgain.[5] He became the company's CEO.[3]
The company's first products were ready-to-drink nutritional and protein shakes.[6] It later added protein powders, and had the number one selling plant-based protein in the country.[6] The company added nutrition bars and products for children.[6]
By 2019, the company reported over $300 million in sales, and its products were being carried in 30,000 stores, including big box retailer Costco.[3] In December, the company sold a majority stake to private equity firm Butterfly Equity.[3] The Ontario Teacher's Pension Plan, a limited partner of Butterfly Equity, was listed as a minority investor.[7]
In July 2021, the company opened a new 25,000 foot office in Irvine, with a test kitchen, rock climbing wall and fitness center for employees.[2]
In January 2022, the company launched its first ever national brand campaign, entitled "That Orgain Feeling", created by Santa Monica-based agency 180LA.[8] In February, it was reported that Swiss conglomerate Nestle had acquired a majority stake in Orgain from Butterfly Equity.[4] Butterfly Equity and founder Abraham were to keep a minority stake, and Nestle had the option to acquire the entire company in 2024.[4]
