Orgamites is a global educational program promoting organ donation awareness for children. The programme is addressed to primary school pupils, aimed at helping children understand the importance of healthy living and is designed to introduce children to the topic of organ donation in a child-friendly way using educational tools.[1][2] The Orgamites stand for nine cartoon characters representing the major organs in the human body, with the help of which families are supported in discussions about organ donation.[3][4]
The programme is presented and managed by All Good Co., a not-for-profit Community Interest Company (CIC) with primarily social objectives and was founded by South-African born director Roydon Turner.[5] The programme also inspires better health, more compassion for others, and greater environmental awareness. It contains a curriculum for parents, teachers, and healthcare practitioners, all aimed at increasing awareness for organ donation.
The Orgamites programme is supported by Live Life Give Life, Onassis Foundation, Canadian Blood Services, Team Margot, Giving To Help Others, NHS Blood and Transplant, Organ Donation Scotland and the European Society for Organ Transplantation. [6]
Mission
According to the HRSA, more than 100,000 men, women and children are on the national U.S. transplant waiting list. Statistically, 17 people die every day in the U.S. waiting for an organ. Each organ donor can potentially save 8 lives.[7] The Mission of Orgamites is to save lives by decreasing the waiting periods for life-saving organs by increasing the number of organs donated. This is to be stimulated by increased awareness especially through discussions within families. ‘The Mighty Organs’ is the Orgamites’ title for the group of organs most needed for organ donations. By creating this new category, the Orgamites hope to shine a much-needed spotlight on a category of organs that up until now haven’t got the attention they deserve. The Orgamites’ mighty organs are cute, funny, fun and appealing characters created for kids of all ages and backgrounds. They’re used as a tool to get more kids and families familiar with the Mighty Organs and more comfortable talking about them and their choices pertaining to them. The Orgamites toolkits consist of resources that parents, teachers and healthcare professionals can use to educate kids and open up more life-saving conversations.[8][9]
