Organoosmium chemistry

Organoosmium chemistry is the chemistry of organometallic compounds containing a carbon to osmium chemical bond. In the same group 8 elements, osmium resembles ruthenium in its complexes.[1]The 5d-orbitals in Os are higher in energy than the 4d-orbitals in Ru. Thus, π backbonding to alkenes and CO is stronger for Os compounds, which leads to more stable organic derivatives. Stronger metal-metal bonds and metal-carbon bonds also have an effect in organoosmium chemistry. Aside from the application of osmium tetroxide in organic synthesis as dihydroxylating agents/oxidizing agents, organoosmium compounds also have importance in arene activation, etc., as discussed below.
