Origin Suite is the second jazz album by Michael Waldrop produced by Origin Records, released January 3, 2018.[1] The CD idea is an eclectic mix of works of a high level, featuring CD showcasing Michael Waldrop. Specifically, the Origin Suite was composed for this CD as a tour de force to showcase Waldrop. Besides the numerous positive reviews from American critics, most notably the CD received 4 of 5 stars by acclaimed music critic and author Brian Morton in the April 2018 edition of Jazz Journal from London.[2] The album also garnered international notoriety in the Dutch Ezine Jazzenzo.[3]
Background
Successful first album and Origin Suite
After the success of Michael Waldrop's Time Within Itself CD, he decided to approach Origin Records to do a CD. They agreed, and this time a wider set of music was used, though still employing Jack Cooper as the primary writer and arranger for the new project. Another substantial grant ($10,000) was obtained by Waldrop from Eastern Washington University to record a CD. Due to the diverse styles and works on Origin Suite, the timeline for completion was far more spread out. Unlike the first album, Origin Suite was recorded in numerous locations to include Seattle, Dallas, Los Angeles, and Berlin. Far more post-production of editing, mixing and mastering was needed to accomplish a final product that had a cohesive sound; both big band and small groups are represented on Origin Suite.
The Music of Origin Suite
The Origin Suite (title work) is inspired by three paintings by artist Wifredo Lam: La Jungla, Nativité, Al Final De La Noche. Lam's paintings are primitive and earthy in approach and draw on Caribbean and Central African themes related to Santería and Cuban Vodú culture. Also, this work was commissioned by Waldrop and is the main feature for him as a drum set and vibraphone artist. The musical idea Waldrop forwarded to Cooper (focus the piece) was a tour de force drum feature like the Channel One Suite written for Buddy Rich in the late 1960s. Much like the titles of the three movements, the Origin Suite is heavily Afro-Latin influenced in style and approach. Specific musical ideas were given to Cooper by Waldrop; a great deal of finishing work on the three tunes and complete orchestration was done by Cooper. Ivana and Belgrade are two other tunes composed by Michael Waldrop which were arranged/orchestrated for the project by Cooper.[4]
Sheath and Sword was originally commissioned by Waldrop in 2004 to be performed with the Western Colorado, Grand Junction Symphony Orchestra. Composed by Jack Cooper as a tribute to his composition mentor Gerald Wilson, the work is in two parts, and the album version is a re-orchestration of the original piece. The main differences are that the string section is taken out, percussion and a male vocalese are added.[4]
Two other big band works from the album are collaborations between Waldrop and South African composer/orchestrator Gerald Stockton.[4] Doo Dat Tang is Stockton's arrangement of Michael Waldrop's tune, giving a nod to the style of composer Thelonious Monk. Stockton's composition Dopler Effect was originally written for the University of North Texas One O'Clock Lab Band. Waldrop had a great affinity for the piece and wanted to include it on his release (hearing demos). Stockton's composition had not been recorded by the One O'Clock Lab Band due to the level of difficulty of the writing.
Through the Mist, Vasconcelos and Still Life are original compositions of Waldrop done in a small group format. Composed by Jimi Tunnell, Mouzon rounds out the titles for the CD as a tribute to the great jazz percussionist Alphonse Mouzon who Tunnell had worked with years before.[4]

The reception for Origin Suite during the pre-release phase was impressive with several prominent producers and reviewers weighing in. Multi-Grammy & Latin Grammy Award winning producer Kabir Sehgal said, "Michael Waldrop delivers a magnificent, eclectic, and intrepid album with Origin Suite. This union of timbres and textures, solos and styles has become the hallmark sound of Waldrop, whose music has come to define modern jazz, both honoring traditions and forging new ones." Award winning programmer and host Brad Stone also previewed Origin Suite saying, "I’ve had the privilege to preview the new album, and it’s “right up my alley”, both in terms of material for my radio program, but also for my own personal enjoyment."
In after release reviews, Waldrop was recognized from a long list of talented University of North Texas One O' Clock Band alumni by Bob Rausch at Cadence magazine, "Waldrop is another artist with past ties to North Texas State and his big band is not traditional as displayed on ORIGIN SUITE." Rausch also adds, "...the various styles employed work well. The main influence seems to be Weather Report with its high energy rhythm and electrified pinning." In addition to the Jazz Journal, Origin Suite received a highly favorable international review from Jazzenzo writer David Cohen.[3]
