Original & Mineral (often abbreviated as O&M) is an Australian professional haircare and salon colour brand founded in 2007. The company is recognised for pioneering ammonia-free and low-tox hair colour formulations that exclude ingredients such as ammonia, sulfates, parabens, PPD, and resorcinol, while maintaining professional performance standards.[1]

History

O&M was founded in Sydney, Australia, by Jose Bryce Smith in 2007.[2] Bryce Smith had previously opened her salon *Atlantis Hair* in 2000, where she began using ammonia-free colour systems after observing client and staff sensitivities to traditional chemical dyes. O&M initially distributed a water-based hair colour before developing its own ammonia-free professional range.

Philosophy and formulations

The company promotes a “clean colour, professional performance” philosophy, focusing on products formulated without harsh chemicals such as ammonia, PPD, and resorcinol. O&M’s “Free-From Five” initiative excludes sulfates, parabens, MIT, propylene glycol, and triclosan from its haircare products.[3]

Education and community

O&M operates professional education programs for stylists and salon owners, including in-salon training and digital courses. In 2023, the company launched Made for Originals (MFO), a festival-style education event featuring international ambassadors and educators.[4]

Global presence

Since its founding, O&M has expanded distribution to more than 25 countries across North America, Europe, and Asia, working with professional distributors and direct-to-consumer channels.[5]

Manufacturing and sustainability

Most O&M products are manufactured in Australia and are PETA-certified cruelty-free and vegan.[6] The brand emphasises sustainable sourcing, recyclable packaging, and reduced environmental impact throughout production.

Media coverage

O&M and its founder have been featured in multiple publications, including Vogue Australia and The Australian Financial Review.[7][8][9][10][11][12]
