Original character

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Original character (OC for short) is a term used for a noncanon character used in fan fictions.[1](p73) OCs are considered a popular form of fan expression.[2]

OCs, especially female original characters, are often called out as being Mary Sues.[3](p280) OCs are also often a self-insert of the author.[4](p11)

In cosplay

Some cosplayers play as the original characters they create.[5](p173) The OCs they create can be based on existing characters, pop culture, or from their imaginations.[6](p71)

Examples

Atalanta has been used as an OC in fan fiction.[7](p136)

In various fandoms

Around 64% of Bronies have an OC.[8]

Criticism

Original characters have been criticized for various reasons. Like Kristina Busse and Karen Hellekson have said all original characters are Mary Sues in an unfavorable way.[9]:112-113

One major criticism against OCs is that they take the stories away from the protagonists.[10](p280)
