Original holiness
Original holiness or original holiness and justice is a concept in Catholicism. It pertains to the original state of holiness and justice that God created humankind in.[1]
Made in the image of God
Because God is all-holy and all-just[2] and made humanity in his image,[3] he gave humans original holiness and justice.[4]
Original holiness
By "original holiness," the Church means the first humans were given sanctifying grace. Via this grace, they shared in God's life.[5]
Original justice
By "original justice," the Church means the first humans experienced perfect harmony with God, with each other, with themselves, and with all of the Universe. This included immunity to death and suffering.[6]
Loss of original holiness and justice
By committing sin, the first humans lost original holiness for all humanity.[7] As a result, the Church believes, humanity now bears original sin and concupiscence.[8]
Grace of Jesus surpasses original holiness
While humankind may have lost original holiness, the Church believes that God gave them a surpassing grace via Jesus:[9] sharing in the Paschal Mystery.[10]
Mary, Mother of God
This is evidenced by Mary the mother of Jesus. By sharing in the Paschal Mystery, she is the Queen of all things that Jesus is the King and God of.[11]
