Orlando Balbo
Orlando “Nano” Balbo
· He was born 24 October 1948 in Pellegrini.
· His grandparents were immigrants.
· His grandfather rented a dairy farm in 1945.
· He and brothers went to primary school in the city.
· He studied in school and he got degree to be a teacher.
· He was called for the military service in 1969.
· While he was doing the military service, Mr. Balbo taught in military school. He taught Mapuche children.
· Paulo Freire was his example as educator.
· He settled in Cipolletti.
· In the morning 24th March in 1976 he was taken away and tortured by the police.
· He lost his hearing
· The Bishop Jaime de Nevares arranged an exile for Orlando in Italy.
· He abandoned Argentina and exiled in Rome till 1985.
· He stayed in Italy until 1985.
· When he returned to Argentina, he settled in Huncal and taught in a Mapuche Community.
· Mr Balbo worked in teacher the National University in Comahue.
· Guillermo Saccomanno wrote a book about Orlando Balbo .The book was published in 2011.
· Orlando received an Honoris Causa for his work .
