History[edit]

After the end of World War II, Andrew Ortner founded the airfield, which originally featured a 2,250 foot grass runway.[3] At one point, the Ortner Air Service (based at the airport) operated C-46, C-47, DC-3, Beechcraft Twins, and a Bell helicopter.[3] The company owned hangars at Detroit International Airport and Cleveland Hopkins airports.[3] The airport was sold in the late 1970s, but returned to ownership by the family in 2011.

Accidents and incidents[edit]

On 27 August 1967, a B-25 carrying skydivers took off from the airport intending to conduct a parachute jump. See 1967 Lake Erie skydiving disaster.
