The Osler Medical Symposium (OMS) is a lecture series sponsored by The Johns Hopkins University.

History[edit]

Established in 2018, the Osler Medical Symposium is designed to challenge the university, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C., communities to push the status quo in a direction that promotes health, equity, and justice to the university in its entirety. The series is named in honor of William Osler, one of the four founding physicians of Johns Hopkins Hospital. The Symposium has established a reputation as a premier medical symposium. All events are free and open to the public.

Leadership[edit]

The Symposium is run entirely by undergraduate students at the University's Homewood Campus. The co-chairs, selected each year by the Student Council, are responsible for choosing a theme, securing speakers, raising the necessary funds, recruiting a student staff, and publicizing the series. There is a staff of about 20 students.[1]

Spring 2018 Symposium: Health, Equity, and Justice in Baltimore[edit]

The theme of the first symposium, held during Spring 2018, was "Health, Equity, and Justice in Baltimore". The 2018 symposium brought together leaders in the fields of health and medicine to discuss a variety of topics including the opioid epidemic, health insurance in the United States, the pharmaceutical industry, population health, entrepreneurship, and gender inequality in medicine.[2] [3] The organizing team was co-chaired by Rushabh Doshi, AJ Tsang, Sachin Govind, and Pavan Patel from Johns Hopkins University.
