Osram Court
Osram Court is a social housing development in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham constructed in 1996 on the site of the Grade II[1] listed[2] Osram Lamp factory, and is managed by the housing association Peabody Trust. Below the estate is a Tesco Supermarket also constructed around the same time.
The Estate has been classified as a deprived area[3] and is located on the Shepherd's Bush Road, sitting in stark contrast to the more affluent neighborhood of Brook Green opposite. The nearest Tube stations are Goldhawk Road, Hammersmith, and Shepherds Bush.
History
Osram Court gets its name from what used to be the Osram lightbulb factory.[4] The factory was set up in 1881, manufactured the Lane-Fox type of carbon lamps, and was one of the earliest lamp factories in Britain. The factory later went on to produce discharge, Tungsten, and fluorescent lamps, before its closure in 1988 having lasted over 100 years. The Building retains the distinctive dome at the top of the entry tower and is a Grade II listed building.[5]
Crime
Like most social housing, the estate has had its fair share of crime problems, involving drugs, weapons, and antisocial behaviour.[6] Regular weapon sweeps are conducted on the estate as the surrounding areas of Shepherds Bush and Hammersmith have a substantial level of gun and knife offenses.[7] Drug dens have also been a problem on the estate with several raids being carried out by the metropolitan police in recent years.[8]
