Ostros Clinic
Ostros Clinic operates within the Bar Health Centre, is located 40 kilometres from Bar, and territorially covers several settlements in the Krajina area, with around 2,000 residents, while 1,645 patients are registered at the clinic.[1]
The clinic is headed by Dr Ganimeta Hoxha, a specialist in general medicine and a chosen doctor for adults, who has worked in Ostros for three decades; the clinic records between 600 and 750 examinations per month, along with 25 to 30 home visits and 180 to 200 community nursing services.[1][2]
Due to population migration, the number of registered patients has decreased from around 3,000 at the beginning of Dr Hoxha’s career to 1,230, while the clinic continues to provide healthcare, home visits, community nursing services, patient transport and a pharmacy.[2]
The clinic also received donated posters from the Montenegrin Society for the Fight Against Cancer, promoting cancer prevention, the harmful effects of smoking, physical activity and a healthy lifestyle; the posters were placed in the examination room, nurses’ room and corridor.[3]
However, due to the continuous decline in population, difficult terrain, poor road infrastructure and the fact that the only doctor is soon retiring, the Ostros Clinic faces a real possibility of being left without a permanent doctor in the future, which represents a serious challenge for healthcare provision in this rural area.[1][2]
