Out of Time: The Material Issue Story is a 2021 American biographical documentary film about Chicago band Material Issue and lead singer Jim Ellison. The film was directed and produced by Balin Schneider in his directorial debut and tells the story of the band's sharp rise and tragic fall following Ellison's suicide.[1]

The film premiered on November 14, 2021 at Sound Unseen Film Festival in Minneapolis, followed by a sold-out screening and performance at Chicago's Lincoln Hall[2][3]. It was later released in theaters by Factory 25, notably hosting Q&A's with Schneider and the band at Alamo Drafthouse's nationwide[4][5]. The film was released on Blu-ray by Vinegar Syndrome in 2022, and pressed on a limited-edition VHS by Factory 25.[6]

The film was later released VOD on Prime Video and Tubi.[7][8]

Cast

Production

Balin Schneider started the production of the film while in college in Topeka, KS. His friends and he would drive up to Chicago and film interviews until later obtaining funding to complete the film. Some interviews, like Jim Ellison's mother and Material Issue drummer Mike Zelenko, were reshot.[9]

The film has the first on-camera interviews with Ellison's family since his death in 1996. The production interviewed Liz Phair, Gilby Clarke, and Rick Nielsen, but the interviews were cut for various reasons [10]

The film contains a trove of never-before-seen footage of the band, recording their third studio album Freak City Soundtrack.

The film is dedicated to Jim Ellison and his mother, Patricia Ellison Wegner, who died shortly after the film came out.
