Owen Tripp is an American entrepreneur best known as the current co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Included Health, a U.S.-based healthcare technology company providing integrated virtual care, care navigation, and advocacy services for millions of people.[1][2] He is a technology executive who began his career with leadership roles at Accenture, eBay, and Reputation.com, where he pioneered data-driven approaches to understanding user behavior. Transitioning into healthcare, he co-founded Grand Rounds Health and later Included Health.[3]
Early life and education
Owen Tripp grew up in Acton, Massachusetts. He went to prep school at Phillips Academy, graduating in 1997, before attending Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, where he studied Spanish and English Literature, earning his Bachelor of Arts with honors in 2001.[4]
Career
Early career
His professional career began with consulting roles at Accenture, where he worked in the Health and Life Sciences Practice, and later at PayPal and eBay, where he was part of initiatives using big data to analyze buyer behavior.[5]
Before entering healthcare, Tripp co-founded Reputation.com, a company in online reputation and privacy management, where he served as Chief Operating Officer.[6] The company established itself by offering privacy and digital reputation solutions to individuals and businesses internationally.[6]
Grand Rounds Health & Included Health
In 2011, Tripp co-founded Grand Rounds Health, a healthcare company initially focused on providing expert second medical opinions to help patients access top medical specialists.[7] Tripp positioned Grand Rounds Health as part of a wider mission to incorporate big data into healthcare decision-making, with the company’s algorithms identifying the most effective doctors while aiming to challenge referral systems.[8]
Under his leadership, in 2020, Grand Rounds Health expanded its clinical navigation and virtual primary care operations, becoming known for blending clinical expertise with digital innovation. The company also enhanced its Premier Navigation solution to include telemedicine, becoming the first of its kind to provide services beyond “tele-urgent” care.[9]
Tripp’s co-founding of Grand Rounds Health was driven by personally witnessing inefficiency in healthcare and a lack of access to top medical experts, primarily when he lost a relative to a rare cancer that likely could have been effectively treated elsewhere. His personal experiences highlighted a gap in healthcare access that inspired Tripp to co-found the company and aim to democratize access to medical experts.[3]
As CEO, Tripp led the merger of Grand Rounds Health and Doctor On Demand in 2021.[10] He oversaw the rebranding of the combined companies under the name Included Health.[11]
Tripp has led the evolution of Included Health into a platform for personalized healthcare, offering virtual care, primary care, behavioral health, and navigation services. The platform has served some of the largest employers in the U.S., including Walmart and Comcast.[12]
Leadership and public engagement
Tripp is a frequent contributor to business and healthcare platforms, including CNBC, Bloomberg, Fast Company, STAT News, and the Harvard Business Review. He speaks regularly at major industry events and conferences.[13]
In press interviews, Tripp has discussed the role of data science and technology in correcting inefficiencies in the U.S. healthcare system and how properly applied analytics can improve patient outcomes while lowering costs.[14]
Tripp has advocated for the use of technology, patient advocacy, and data-driven care to improve healthcare outcomes.[3]
Awards and recognition
Tripp has been recognized by several organizations for his work in healthcare and technology. He was named one of Goldman Sachs’ "100 Most Intriguing Entrepreneurs" and has been selected as a Top 50 Builder + Innovator at the company’s annual gathering.[15] Rock Health recognized him as “Most Beloved CEO,” based in part on employee feedback and company culture.[16] Under his leadership, Grand Rounds Health and Included Health were named Technology Pioneers by the World Economic Forum, and appeared on Fast Company’s Most Innovative Companies list.[16]
Personal life
Owen Tripp is married to Kimberly Dasher Tripp, a philanthropic strategist and founder of Strategy for Scale, who has over 20 years of experience advising donors and organizations on high-impact philanthropy. She has held roles at the Skoll Foundation and serves on several nonprofit boards.[17]
In 2016, Tripp awoke unable to hear out of his right ear. His primary physician considered it a minor issue but referred him to a specialist, who was unable to provide an accurate diagnosis. Tripp then used Grand Rounds Health to connect with a head radiologist who identified a tumor on the nerve leading to his right ear. Following surgery to remove the tumor, Tripp became deaf in that ear. The experience made him aware of challenges within the healthcare system. It drives him to improve how patients access and receive care.[3]
