The Oxford University German Society is the oldest national society at the University of Oxford, England. The society serves as a contact point for all German-speaking students at Oxford as well as those interested in German culture:[1]. In addition to culinary events and traditional festivities, the society also organizes speaker events with prominent individuals from German-speaking countries [2].

History[edit]

The roots of the Oxford University German Society date back to 1911, making it one of the oldest student-run societies[3]. In 1911 a group of German and British students founded the ‘Hanover Club’ as a forum for discussion of ‘topics of interest and importance to both nations’. The Club, which existed until 1913, was also meant to foster friendships between German and British students. It was a "discussion group founded by British and German students at the University of Oxford in 1911 to ‘promote the cause of good-feeling between Germany and England by giving Englishmen and Germans in the University opportunities of meeting and discussing topics of interest and importance to both nations’". [4]

Nowadays, the Oxford University German Society describes itself as being a hub for a highly diverse group of students of any nationality interested in German culture, politics, and language [5]. The growing popularity of these issues has led to membership of the society exceeding a thousand members [5].

Activities and events[edit]

The Oxford University German Society is hosting a large number of high-profile speaker and discussion events, German-themed social events, and opportunities to meet German business leaders. The society is registered with the University of Oxford and administered by a committee that is elected each Hilary term [5]. Events include social gatherings, film evenings, carnivals, or the European Night, organised together with other national societies at the University of Oxford [6]. Another very popular festival is the 'Oxtoberfest', which is named after the famous German folk festival Oktoberfest and is organised together with the Oxford Union Society [7].
