Ozonized Glycerin

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Overview

Ozonized glycerin (also known as ozonated glycerin) is a compound obtained by the reaction of glycerin with ozone. The oxidation of glycerin by ozone is resulting in the formation of ozonized compounds within the glycerin molecule. It is used in medical and cosmetic applications due to its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and wound-healing properties. [1]

History

The use of ozonized glycerin in medicine can be traced back to the early 20th century. Around 1900, American chemist Charles Marchand published a book describing the medicinal applications of a compound known as Glycozone, which was essentially ozonized glycerin. At the time, it was marketed as a disinfectant and internal remedy. Despite this early interest, the use of ozonized glycerin gradually faded from medical practice, likely due to evolving pharmaceutical standards and limited understanding of ozone chemistry at the time. For over a century, the compound remained largely forgotten until it was re-examined and technologically refined in the early 2000s. The original publication by Marchand has since been reissued and is now publicly available, offering historical insight into the early experimentation with ozone-based therapeutics.

Development and Background

Ozonized glycerin is based on a patented technology developed in 2001 by VMC (now Mediplus Pharma), a company established in 1973 in Japan. [2] This invention was inspired by the need to address challenges in the medical field.

Origins and Inspiration

Initially, ozonized water was used in medical settings and was used in medical settings to prevent skin irritation caused by frequent handwashing while also to promote skin regeneration. This led to further exploration of ozone’s potential in medical applications for a more stable form for practical use.

Technical Challenges

Ozone is highly unstable and decomposes rapidly, making its stable utilization a technical challenge. Additionally, its strong characteristic odor posed another issue for widespread use.

Solutions and Applications

VMC (now Mediplus Pharma) developed a process for the reaction of plant-derived glycerin with ozone. This process successfully stabilized the effects of ozone and eliminated its odor, leading to the registration of a patent (No. 7534001). [3] The following effects have been confirmed through this technology:

  • Antimicrobial and bactericidal effects [4] [5] [6]
  • Promotion of wound healing [7]
  • Stimulation of cell proliferation [8] [9]
  • Enhancement of collagen synthesis [8]
  • Moisturizing and skin-brightening effects [1]

Initially, products using this technology were stable for up to three months at room temperature and approximately one year when frozen. However, further research was required to ensure stability at room temperature, and in 2022, a stable formulation was successfully developed.

Safety

Ozonized glycerin’s safety has been confirmed primarily for external use on the skin and oral applications. ________________________________________ [10] [11]
