The Foundation for Partnership in the Niger Delta (PIND) is a non-profit organization founded in 2010, and registered in Nigeria with partners in Washington.
The foundation aims to promote peace, foster economic growth, reduce poverty levels, reduce gender inequality and support inclusion for women and children in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria through coordinated partnership with stakeholders and the government.[1][2]
History
PIND Foundation was created in 2010 to address economic and sociocultural issues in the Niger Delta Region of Nigeria. The states in this region include Abia, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo, Imo, Ondo, and Rivers State. The foundation got its first funding from Chevron Corporation and has since gone on to attract various support and sponsorship from within and outside Nigeria.
The foundation, through its strategic partnership in the region, aims to reduce poverty, conflict, and over-dependence on the oil sector, which is one of the revenue-generating sectors for the government of Nigeria.
Activities
As part of its activities in the Niger Delta, the PIND Foundation, in collaboration with the Ford Foundation, educates communities on the importance of the Petroleum Industry Act to ensure effective practice in the oil sector. [3]
The foundation also engages with farmers in the region and has successfully certified and onboarded fourteen commercial cocoa seed entrepreneurs in Ibadan, Oyo State. The certification is aimed at providing the best practices for the cocoa farmers as cocoa amounts to one of Nigeria's highest exported products, increasing its GDP yearly.
Recently, the foundation also initiated the Access to Energy project in 2018, which has led to the provision of about 40 solar mini grids for communities in the coastal region of the Niger Delta.[4]
The foundation is involved in sensitizations and campaigns aimed at educating the communities on conflict resolution and peace settlement in the Niger Delta Region.[1]
