PRABESH BARUA

Dr. Prabesh Barua is an ex-banker, entrepreneur, nature activist and an independent filmmaker, who started his career as a school teacher. Though he is from Kolkata, his ancestral family is native of Chittagong, Bangladesh. Prior to becoming a filmmaker, Prabesh worked for many banks for more than ten years. From childhood he was fond of cameras and technologies. Prabesh, in his early life, was deeply moved and influenced by the works of the great film maestro Satyajit Ray. Ray's creations like Feluda, Sakha Proshakha, Aguntuk made a long lasting effect on Prabesh and this drove him to be a filmmaker. The notable works of Prabesh as a Filmmaker are "Kalpona Holeo Satti" and "Beepasha2.0" which have many 'international accreditations.'

Early or Academic Life

Prabesh was born in Kolkata in the year 1981. He was fond of reading books from his childhood and collected many juvenile classics since his school days. He was good in his studies and passed his high school from West Bengal Board with high grades and joined College with Zoology as a major from VidyaSagar College under University of Calcutta. He completed his graduation in 2002 and continued his higher studies, joining Presidency College. However, he left Presidency College the same year and got admission to Business Administration at Manipal University to pursue an MBA, as Presidency College did not offer masters in Genetics. In 2004 he successfully completed his post graduation in Business Administration with a live project from Genius Jobs.Com, an online recruitment portal, and became a topper in the university with 93 percent in projects.

Banking Career

While pursuing his MBA, Prabesh joined a school as an assistant teacher. But he left soon and joined an MNC in Mumbai. With his job, he started preparing for Govt. jobs such as Indian Railways, Banks and many more. Within a couple of years he was selected in LICI, a Public Sector Insurance company. From LICI he completely shifted to Banks. State Bank Of India, a premier bank in India, offered Prabesh to join the institution as a Marketing Associate. Prabesh joined many Indian Banks like Bank of Baroda, OBC, Union Bank to name a few, as Probationary Officers and gained wide experience in the Banking Industry. On January 2019, he left the Bank to start a new career in Film making. However, his immense contribution to the banking sector earned him the title Honoris Causa - Honorary Doctorate of Finance and Banking Management from Washington Digital University on 20th May'24 and from Mr. Prabesh Barua he became Dr Prabesh Barua.

Film making Career

While working in a Bank, Prabesh got great exposure to study human life. As public sector banks posted young officers to rural India, this allowed him to study human lives across PAN India. During his last year in the Bank he formed a BongVoyage an YouTube Channel that talks about Kolkata and Nature primarily in 2017. The close association with customers and their experiences of livelihood while interacting with them during his service, and his eagerness to make films, made him resign from a lucrative banking service in 2018. Within a year Prabesh made many short films, and his debut was ShortCut streamed on 15th April 2018 while he was still employed by the Bank. After leaving the bank Prabesh made "Dont Be negative", Selfie, Reservation and many more. The Channel got great views and appreciation from many. In the meantime, he got his certification from CMI, Kolkata in Cinematography and also got a Digital Filmmaking Certification from DigiFilming, Mumbai on June 2019. His work was appreciated by IFTDA, Mumbai and the association offered him an Asstt. Director membership. The year 2020 was notable for everyone in the world, especially with the worldwide pandemic creating restrictions for many, particularly those who had invested in startups. Film production stalled for Prabesh. However, his passion for film making made him write many wonderful screenplays and one of such beautiful scripts was "Kalpona Holeo Satti" and was made in 2021 and it was the first film that was selected in Indian Panaroma International Film Festival, Pune. Year 2021 was notable for Prabesh because Beeepasha2.0 a film about Humanoid made him a full fledged filmmaker. Many awards from different parts of the World like Druk International Short Film Festival, World Film Carnival, Singapore, nomination from Dada Shaheb Phalke International Film Festival and many regional ones too appreciated the work of Prabesh as a Filmmaker. At present Prabesh is an Honorary Creative Head of an in-house production SB sTuDio and running the YouTube channel BongVoyage!Prime successfully. In the year 2023, Prabesh joined the secretariat service of Govt. of West Bengal. However, he is still crafting his films.
